Discrimination, peer violence, rejection and misunderstanding are just some of the issues raised by the plays performed on Sunday, the third day of the competition programme at the 12th International festival of high school theatre Juventafest.
The play “Scars” by the Youth Theatre Bileća (Bosnia and Herzegovina) was performed at the Centre for culture and youth in Municipality Centre Sarajevo. It emerged as a result of research conducted by the young actors from Bileća. The play is based on newspaper articles and literary works such as Ivo Andrić’s “Children “, Selma Parisi’s “Who is it? “, and Jelena Tasić’s “Six “. The director of the play “Scars,” which was rewarded with thunderous applause from the audience, is Bojan Milidragović, who co-authored the script with Lazar Gnjato.
In the evening at the Sarajevo Youth Theatre, the Little Theatre “Duško Radović” from Belgrade performed “Utopia” – a play developed based on workshops with teenagers, who are also the performers on stage. The script was created from the participants’ documentary statements, incorporating their experiences, views and opinions on a variety of social issues. This play prompted the audience to reflect on what utopia truly is, for which it was rewarded with standing ovations.
On Monday, the fourth day of the festival, two remaining plays from the competition programme are scheduled. At the Centre for culture and youth in Municipality Centre Sarajevo, starting at 5:00 PM, the Drama Club Catholic School Centre St. Francis, Tuzla Gymnasium, will perform the play “Why did you wake up your husband?”, while at 8:00 PM, the Sarajevo Youth Theatre will open for the play “Spring Awakening”, by the acting troupe of the Drama Kids Academy Sarajevo.
Admission to all plays is free.
