A play from Pula received a standing ovation
The twelfth International festival of high school theatre Juventafest, organized by the “Medija-Art” Association, was officially declared open tonight at the Sarajevo Youth Theatre by the doyen of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian theatre and director of this event, Jasna Diklić. Nothing can compare with the willingness to communicate with others, to listen and ask, she said, encouraging young people to embrace freedom and creativity on their paths of development.
This year’s selection by Emina Omerović consists of seven plays from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Croatia, and in the pre-festival programme Juventafest Plus – Inclusion Movement, the documentary play “Up and Down” was performed last night at the Sarajevo War Theatre.
In the past twelve years, Juventafest has gathered more than 3,000 participants from 15 countries, and this year’s awarding of the Grand Prix for the best play and the Special Jury Award will be decided by a jury composed of actress Ksenija Pajić, dramatist and professor Dragan Komadina and actor Benjamin Bajramović.
The play “Them” by the Drama and dance studio, Istrian national theatre Pula, opened the 12th Juventafest and received a standing ovation. It set a high bar for the jury and the acting troupes that will be performing in the coming days of the festival.
This dance play, choreographed and directed by Andrea Gotovina, deeply explores the theme of growing up. Nine young and brave girls use movement to express and give voice to their inner worlds, desires, hopes, fears, hidden thoughts, questions, silent aspirations, as well as their happy and unhappy loves.
On the second day of the festival, which runs until September 10, the programme features the play “The Cripple of Inishmaan” by the Acting Workshop Cultural Centre Čačak, at the Centre for culture and youth in Municipality Centre Sarajevo at 5:00 PM. Additionally, the play “2100: A Tale About Aska” by the Theatre PATOS Smederevo, will be performed at the Sarajevo Youth Theatre, starting at 8:00 PM.
